When to Book Newborn Photos in Edinburgh

(so you don’t miss the sleepy, squishy stage)

Short answer: book your session during the second trimester (around 20–28 weeks) and plan to photograph your baby between 5–14 days old. I’ll pencil your due date in the studio diary, then confirm a firm slot once your little one arrives.

Why photographers recommend the first two weeks

  • Sleepier, curlier poses. Newborns spend longer in deep sleep and are naturally comfy in those womb-like positions.

  • Less startle reflex. Easier transitions between setups, which means more variety in your gallery.

  • Flaky skin & baby acne are usually minimal. You’ll still get beautifully natural skin—without lots of retouching.

Can’t do 5–14 days? Don’t worry. I regularly photograph older newborns (3–8 weeks, even 8–12 weeks). The look is a touch more awake and “stretchy”—think gorgeous eye contact, gentle wraps, and parent snuggles.

How booking works (stress-free)

  1. Enquiry during pregnancy. We book your due date to the diary (no need to predict the exact day!).

  2. Baby arrives.  If your baby is early, you or your partner send a quick message within 48 hours of baby being born and I'll bring your date forward. Likewise, if your baby is late - just call me and we can move it back.

  3. We set your session. I’ll offer slots around that sweet 5–14 day window—flexible for early/late arrivals, C-section recovery, twins, and NICU stays. You can secure your date easily by booking online or calling Clare on 07545884182

  4. On the day. Sessions are calm and baby-led with plenty of time for feeds, changes, and cuddles.

Missed “the window”? Here’s what to expect

  • 3–6 weeks: slightly more awake time, lovely eye contact, wrapped poses, and parent images.

  • 6–12 weeks: fewer curly poses, more stretches and expressions. Think clean, timeless portraits with your baby’s emerging personality.

Studio timing tips (Edinburgh specifics)

  • Morning starts tend to suit newborn rhythms and soft studio light.

  • Winter babies: diaries fill quickly around Christmas and New Year—pencil in early.

  • Spring & summer: still busy (hello wedding-season siblings!), but weekday mornings are often available.

Safety & comfort come first

I’m trained in safe newborn handling, spotters/props are used appropriately, and we keep the studio warm, clean, and calm. If baby needs a break, we take it. Always.
