My advice for new parents is ALWAYS plan to get in a couple of pictures. Sometimes mums may not feel like they really want to step in front of the camera so soon after giving birth but trust me Im a genious at posing and I even have a beautiful portrait you can do without even doing your hair and make up - when you are much older you'll thank your younger self for the memories. When you come to your shoot think about your decor, are you light and airy or dark and moody? If you'd like a darker background for your family pictures, choose darker toned tops like greys, blues, dark greens. Likewise, if you like a lighter background, choose lighter tones. I am entirely baby led when it comes to capturing your baby's brand new features. Ive been a newborn baby photographer over 10 years now and understand baby's cues. I stop for as many feeds, nappy changes, bottle feeds or just cuddles as needed. In general my newborn baby portrait sessions last 2 - 3 hours. I do not book any other session on the day of a newborn shoot so you can be sure of a relaxed atmosphere and no need to get the images in a rushed enviroment. Baby's can take time and we MUST go at their speed. I do provide as much coffee, tea, diet coke and cookies as you like to keep you going though.

You are welcome to bring along a special teddy, or maybe somebody knitted a beautiful shawl. One person brought along wedding tartan and we incorporated that into the session. Essentially you can bring along anything. It helps if you let me know prior to the shoot so I can plan how to incorporate you piece. I would suggest not bringing outfits for the baby as shop bought outfits can swamp babies. I purchase specifically hand made items for newborn photoshoots. If your baby takes a dummy, please do bring it along. If your baby is bottle feeding or combined bottle and breast then please bring along extra milk. Babies do tend to drink more milk than usual at their portrait sessions.

Don't worry if your baby has been a little grizzly. I say to parents that I usually see it all during our photoshoot. The baby will cry at some point, need a nappy change at some point and feeds. They are constantly moving from either walking or just breathing from their mothers.
